OPI Russian Navy, two coats, no flash
I have a question for all of you today- what started your polish obsession? Was it one polish in particular? Was it a gradual process?
I have always loved nail polish. My mom taught me how to apply nail polish when I was pretty young and we had a relatively large drugstore polish collection while I was growing up.
Then... I spotted OPI Russian Navy in a magazine ad. Before that, I think I maybe owned one or two OPI polishes, and I really didn't know that they released seasonal collections. Russian Navy was the first polish that I saw in an ad and then actually went out looking for it. Before that, I really just went and browsed drugstores if I felt like getting new polish. It was actually hard for me to find Russian Navy in my town, but my mom finally found it in a hair salon. After Russian Navy, I began to follow OPI's releases and generally would pick up two or three polishes from each release. Then I started reading nail blogs, I found websites like Transdesign and 8ty8 Beauty, and the rest is history!!!

I still LOVE OPI Russian Navy- it will always have a special place in my heart. Russian Navy a true navy with gorgeous shimmer. I love that it never looks purple or black. Shown is two coats with one coat of Color Club top coat and you can see the reflection of my screen door in my nails!
OPI is suing e-tailers. I guess they didn't have contracts through OPI. I wrote about it on my blog and there is a comment there with better articles if you are interested.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, my polish obsession was set off by my mother! She painted my nails when I was a baby and we always had a large collection of polishes, it was always a love for me all my life but in the past year it has really surged ahead on the list to be my biggest obsession!
Ahhh that's really interesting. I always wondered how they sold OPI for such discounted prices. Thanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteAnd also thanks for sharing about what started your love for polish! I definitely inherited my mom's interest in polish as well! It's like a rule that we don't wear open toe shoes without polish on our toes!
Yes, I just placed a big OPI order on transdesign. I believe there was an issue with OPI wanting to control their stock, and ensuring there weren't fakes in the market. Essie has also gone full price on transdesign as well. I'll basically only be buying China Glaze online now. Kinda sad, and I probably won't be getting much full price OPI now either.
ReplyDeleteI always liked nail polish but I started getting obsessed about 9 years ago when I spent a year studying in Spain. We had a shop near my house, like a dollar tree type place, that sold really cheap nail polishes, I stocked up every other day, I loved the place! After that I started buying OPI online, moved onto Jessica, Zoya and China Glaze and then started reading the blogs.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been a day without nail polish for 9 years...I love it! It's such a treat and I still get as excited by it as I always have. I love it and make no excuses.
I'm going to start my own blog now to share my obsession with other people.
scarlettholly- Hopefully some site will still have OPI. Nailetc. still has them up, I don't know for how long. I hate paying $8.50 for OPI.
ReplyDeleteClaire- Thanks for sharing! That's exactly how I view polish- a treat! It's a small thing, but I always feel better when I polish on. I've discovered that blogging is a great way to share your love with people who actually care, rather than boring your significant other LOL.
Two things I guess. Doing a masters I'm under a lot of pressure, thus requiring lots of retail therapy. Add a superdrug on my way to uni, and there's a recipe right there. It's a little thing but so bright and colourful. Then I discovered China Glaze Up and away collection online, and that was the final straw :)
ReplyDeleteWOW! Russian Navy started it all for you! Awesome!
ReplyDeleteAnna- at least nail polish is a relatively cheap way to indulge in retail therapy, right? That's what I tell myself!!!
ReplyDeleteJackie- yup Russian Navy! At the time it was released, it was so different and striking to me!
Here's the scoop on what's been going on with OPI and e-tailers!

Anyway, my nail polish obsession started about a year ago, I guess. Before then I only owned like, two colors that I would wear for special occassions; a dark cranberry shimmer and a pale coral shimmer, both by Color Girl. When I found out they were discontinued, I started looking online for dupes, and I found the nail polish blogs (I found ALU first)... and thus about 1,000 lemmings were born! Then I found the e-tailers, and once I got started I couldn't stop, much to the chagrin of my husband, so I put myself on a fixed monthly budget. It's been going that way ever since.
Thanks for that link Kelsey. I also found ALU first! A fixed monthly budget sounds like a REALLY smart idea. I might have to work on that one!
ReplyDeleteStarted wearing polish years ago to break the biting habit but since I found nail blogs? OMG, out of control, lol.
ReplyDeleteOPI claims that they want to ensure quality control and can't with the filed off serial numbers on the Etailer bottles, but strangely enough Amazon and Target are still selling bottles with filed off serial numbers and OPI hasn't said a bloody word to them. In my opinion they just didn't want their product being sold by 'discount' sources because it's bad for their prestige >retch< (they're still getting their full cut since the stuff is being rerouted from licensed sources), and while Target and Amazon are too big to threaten, the little guys aren't. Target also charges $8.50 a bottle. You can find quite a few on Amazon for $2-$3. I think OPI is vastly overrated (I only have two because they chip so badly on natural nails) but if I see a color I MUST have, I'll get it at Amazon. Screw OPI.
Sandi- thanks for sharing about your polish addiction LOL.
ReplyDeleteI really like OPIs wide brush, but I am very often not too excited by their colors. Certainly not $8.50 excited. I'm skipping that whole Summer Flutter collection. It's just kind of the same as CG glass-fleck or the Zoya Sparkles. So, pass. We'll see what other OPI collections I'll be passing in the future!
